Dear Black Girl, Do Whatever You Want To Do With Your Hair.

  Dear black girl,

You don't have to pretend about the kinkiness, tougheness and nappiness of your black hair. Damn, you have to wear your hair relaxed whether it is dry and brittle, to get through the job interviews. It's how the black hair is policed. It's a form of oppression tied to white supremacy.
You know they tell you otherwise, how unkempt your hair is, when you wear your natural hair, they don't even compliment you when you wear your Bantu knots or Afro, it's unclassy they tell you, clad in it in a scarf.
What if when you wear dreadlocks, the narrative is about creating you to be who you are not, the stories they tell you is different from who you are, they say maybe she's a goon, one of the bad girls, oh, the generation of the aggressive Africans that stab people in the subway. All because of the narrative of the dreadlocks you wear. They don't consider the fashion statement of the dreadlocks. When have natural hair been acceptable?  By the white or black people.

I guess when you decide to wear wigs and weaves, the men and a whole lot of them come at you telling you that you are trying to act sophisticated like the whites. Oh that insult! You can't wear weaves again without the team natural gang telling you how to wear your black hair. To believe that you are faking because you like you some Brazilian hair, that it's about choice. And that is what you choose to do with your hair. Rather do it them braids instead they tell you. Or they say you are trying too hard do like them whites. Yes, there is truth in that, with the weave, and hair extensions packaged and designed to suit the tastes to the blonde, brunette hairs but not the black hair. Black girl, do whatever you want with your hair.

What about the frustrations that comes with the career aspirations you decide to go for, and you have to perm your hair, what if it is not what you want, do you subscribe to the validations - a reality which we can not control. Sadly, it's a reality we have to undergo as having the kinky hair.

Black girl, I think it's a reality we can reject. Your hair is who you want to it be, whether it offends. Is your hair Afro or in perms, be glad. Wait, what if you decide to wear cornrows or braids. Do it. You want to be deadlocked. There is no shame about that, it's a sexy thing to do, forget the stereotypes, even if you like them wigs or weaves. Oh I forgot, what if you want to go bald, go girl, do whatever you want to do with your hair. Sell your own narrative about your hair. Owe and live it. Kinky, tough, nappy hair, is beautiful. So is being bald or deadlocked. Otherwise if you like weaves or braids, wear it with the sexy glow, dear black girl.

   Please love your hair.
